The Ultimate Clipboard utility – UPDATED for FCPX

For months now I’ve been racking my brain, trying to find an app or a workaround that would allow me to drag files from different locations into an temporary holding area, then drag these files into Automator, Compressor or FCP. Ideally, this app could also detect when a file path is copied and show me the actual file instead.

Well, Quicksilver (of course) does all this, and more.

There are lots of tutorials on the web about using Quicksilver. Assuming you’ve already installed it, here are the basics for setting up the clipboard feature:

  1. Install “Clipboard plug-in” and “Shelf plug-in”.

  2. Go to Catalog → Quicksilver. Enable “Internal Commands”.
  3. Go to Preferences → Clipboard → Enable “Capture History”

  4. Go to Triggers → Custom Triggers. Click on the plus sign at the buttom → Hotkey.
  5. In Select an Item, type in: Show Clipboard. I recommend assigning Shift+F1 for the hotkey.

Shift+F1 will now show/hide the clipboard history. You can also manually drag files or text in it and drag them out at will.

What’s more, we can use this powerful feature in conjunction with my “FCP-Reveal in Finder Multiple Files” app (see this post). Rather than color labeling files or making a new folder full of aliases, we can simply copy all the file paths to the clipboard and Quicksilver will group them all into one dragable batch(!)

I’ve uploaded a modified version of my app that does only this (remember, you’ll need TextWrangler for this to work).

I wonder if LaunchBar’s clipboard history would work in a similar way?

Does this work in fcpx 10.1? Don’t know if I’m just doing something wrong or it’s broken. Can’t seem to get it to work.

      Hi Brad,
The app was indeed broken. I’ve fixed the code and it should work now.
